Well it might.... but it might not :) Here is a hypothetical reason why: Feature X is added to the Controller, in doing this the developers have to break feature Y, but it's OK as the appropriate server side code is changed so fix it again. This all happened in 7.3. Now, you use the firmware for 7.3 on a 7.2 server and that fix for Y obviously isn't implemented so at best something doesn't work, at worst the Controller becomes useless.
It's a very simplistic example, but you get the idea.
