That seemed to do it. Well it was some combination of the above. I enabled audio (it was already enabled). Did a factory reset but all that did was to give me the hassle of going thru the WEP code input again. No duet player available. Then took battery out & back in again. Now I see duet_one listed as a player....alongside squeezeplay, transporter & Squeezebox 2. Listening via headphones as I write this. Strange though that although I had audio enabled, somehow it hadn't 'kicked in' until battery removed & replaced. Anyway, seems to be OK now... Versions per 1st post.
