Since posting the message I've realised that it was only happening on the player in my study so I looked to see what was set different from all the other players. The problem appears to have been having 'Screensaver when stopped' set as Date & Time screensaver. The date and time saver however was not showing through MusicInfo which is my 'Screensaver when Playing' but was presumably intercepting the play command.
Changing 'Screensaver when stopped' to MusicInfo has solved the problem.
