I think the sound quality problems break down into two elements: i) hiss
and ii) noise artifacts that sound similar to AM radio in bad weather
;-(

Actually I think the hiss (i) may be coming from the source material
i.e. the controller is -- dare I say it -- too revealing of source
quality issues.

But on the other hand I think the "AM radio" noise (ii) is coming from
the controller itself; my hypothesis is that it is a (power supply
borne) noise leakover from the wifi receiver into the audio stages.

I can confirm that Newy's discovery about changing from WAV to FLAC
also seemed to improve things for me. And indeed this is consistent
with my wifi leakover hypothesis, since WAV uses a lot more wifi
bandwidth than FLAC or other stream formats do...
