Ok, I think I've figured this out, although I'm afraid I can't reproduce it all the time.
If you have the Settings page open (I have it open in a second tab in the same Firefox browser window), the 'current' player selected in Settings can affect the target of the Play and Add buttons in the other tab. Settings follows a current player just like the main page does. As soon as I closed the Settings tab, the problem went away. I then opened Settings again, changed players in Settings and got stuck back in the same situation with all music directed to the current player in the Settings tab.
