I just updated to r28243, and same problem when starting - unable to write to pid. The Synaptic installer ended with a crash warning after the update (because the process failed to start). I did manage to start the server successfully using "sudo /etc/init.d/squeezeboserver start" but there is a warning in the server log about not being able to write the pid file.
