If it's giving weird results, seems worth leaving it out for now. From what little I know of Flickr, it seems to me that a more interesting option would be the ability to enter a tag (or even multiple) and pull images based on those. That seems to be in line with the ethos of flickr, and if an particular Flickr user is thorough enough to tag their own work with their id, then the artist option still exists through that.
