i'm no expert on the subject, but is it actually better to scan in
order?

doesn't where the data is on the hard disk matter more?  defrag status?
etc...

my understanding of the physics of hard drives is that the data is
spread out over the disk in a non-linear manner, and so scanning in a
non-linear way is actually more efficient for reading.  i think this is
done on purpose and newer windows even arranges data over time purposely
in a non-linear way based on data usage, (it tracks it), so that access
times are optimized.

i find jims results to be totally confusing however, b/c when i watch a
scan progress it seems to be in a completely linear order, is this false
reporting?
