I haven't tested this myself, but Dynamic Playlist plugin has a feature
where it can add static playlists bit by bit to the Now Playing
playlist. This will always keep the Now Playling playlist pretty short
since you for example can limit i to contain the 10 last tracks and the
next 10 tracks to come. So if the limitation is only the Now Playing
playlist this might be a solution.

To use this you just launch the playlist from the "Dynamic Playlists"
menu instead of "Playlists". If you like more configurability, you can
also install the "SQL Playlist" plugin and create a new playlist based
on the "Random playlist songs" template and select the static playlist
you like to base the SQL Playlist playlist on.
