I deleted the old playlist & Apple Lossless files from my iTunes library and - utilizing the original cd - re-encoded the files one more time and they are now playing fine again (using MacOS X 10.6.3 & iTunes 9.1). I had already re-encoded the offending one using iTunes 9.1 before so the file sizes are identical, only the meta-data differs slightly.
As it was playing fine until I had changed the meta-data before, it seems likely that there is s.th. wrong with the handling of the meta-data either by iTunes or SBS (7.5 and later).
