On the contrary, I think it's quite common.  eg. on an iPod, if you press play 
when browsing to anything, it immediately starts to play that selection, losing 
whatever was previously playing.  You can add to playlist (eg. "on the go"), 
and then play that playlist, but that isn't the default action when playing an 
item.

The difference is that in other apps, it's often more obvious that you are 
instructing it to play something new.

The difference with the new Squeezebox player interface, is that the navigation 
buttons are mixed up with actions, so it is not obvious when clicking something 
will perform a play action, replacing the playlist.

I think party mode in itself was okay.  I never wanted to use it myself 
(predominantly because I am often the only person that uses my Squeezeboxes, I 
don't use playlists and don't have parties!).  The main thing I didn't like was 
the way party mode could be automatically turned on.  It should have only had 
an option to manually turn the mode on/off.
