I personally use PHPmyAdmin for managing mySQL. When adding a user it
allows to choose from which machine this user can connetct to the DB.

I also feel I've got to clarify one thing: my DB history with 7.6 is as
follows:

SQLite - stability issues
Squeeze mySQL - issues resolved
own mySQL instance - issues still resolved, less server processes
