You're totally right and it looks like I've wasted my time. The
packages index now lists 5.12 as the "official" perl for FreeBSD, it's
been updated since I last looked. I suppose that means it's nearly time
for FreeBSD 8.3. Bah.

The SBS developers use specific module version which they take copies
of, maintain and include, whereas the FreeBSD folks strive to have just
one version of each module or library, and they assume that the latest
versions don't break earlier functionality. This isn't always true.

Which leaves our FreeBSD-addicted SBS community with two choices: go
with the versions that the FreeBSD dudes put out and suffer the
occasional breakage, or use the Logitech releases/nightlies builds and
keep the old perl versions around just for SBS. And on the gripping
hand, DIY.
