I updated to the newest Debian build from the unstable repo this
morning (v7.7.0, r33535, Wed Sep 28 03:04:03 PDT 2011).

Same problems as yesterday, where I can see the upnp service with my
software, but can't browse it.

What I did realize is that I did not resolve the error message I ran
into yesterday. What I see is that every time I restart the server,
the very first time I try to browse the upnp library, I get this pair
of error messages:

[11-09-28 09:52:31.4141] Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (147)
Error: Select task failed calling Slim::Plugin::UPnP::Events::request:
Can't call method "pluginData" on an undefined value at
/usr/share/perl5/Slim/Plugin/UPnP/MediaRenderer/AVTransport.pm line
216.
; fh=HTTP::Daemon::ClientConn=GLOB(0xe919a68)
[11-09-28 09:52:31.4579] Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (147)
Error: Select task failed calling Slim::Plugin::UPnP::Events::request:
Can't call method "pluginData" on an undefined value at
/usr/share/perl5/Slim/Plugin/UPnP/MediaRenderer/RenderingControl.pm
line 161.
; fh=HTTP::Daemon::ClientConn=GLOB(0xe94d270)

This message does not show up again until I restart the server and try
to browse again, but it does this every time. I did not resolve this
yesterday like I thought. I was just incorrectly thinking it would
display right at server startup, but that's not the case.
