I don't know the answer to your question.

But, you probably guessed it already :-) you could use Whitebear instead
of the LMS plugin.

Whitebear "offers" tracks in three formats (namely L16, Mp3, "native" --
insofar as "native" is not already Mp3), so the control point / renderer
can choose whichever of those offers it supports. You will probably find
that this functionality will get you going out of the box with most
renderers; but for hard cases, there is also a settings page where you
can customise the compatibility options for particular clients (i.e.
always "offer" Mp3 first).
