No. It's really just a different way to distinguish revisions. With svn every checkin would increase the number by 1. Git doesn't provide revision numbers, but hashes. Therefore we use the timestamp of the last change as the "revision number".

Yes. Give them a try. There _might_ be issues, as moving to git lead to some re-arranging of the repositories.
