...and one more bit of weirdness. although the playlists are listed in all players except the Transporter, none of the tracks in the respective playlists is listed, i.e., the list is empty.
Ok, I went back to your first posting and checked the attached scanner.log. It's listing hundreds (thousands?) of playlist issues:

Quite obviously the playlists are still pointing at your internal (or some other) disk, while you moved the files to an external disk. Could you please go back to 7.8 and double-check this was no issue there?
Did you, besides the LMS 7.8 -> 7.9 update, change other parameters in your system? Eg. is moving the music files to the external disk a recent change?
