Finally had a breakthrough. Reinstaled SSODS (4.14 Mod2) and went back to 7.7.6 and love and behold - it started.
I'll now let it finish the initial scan (which will take ages on 7.7) and then try to upgrade either directly to 7.9 or 7.7->7.8->7.9.
