PSPad uses chars above base ASCII table (> #255) to display spaces and
tabs.
If you use nonunicode font, theses chars are missing and PSPad shows you
e.g. black square. This option force PSPad to use base ascii table chars
for it.

Synedit uses nonproportional fonts only.
