I've been observing the same thing for quite a while now, and it also
happened with builds prior
to 2199. On my machine it looks like this:

(viz http://www.uni-due.de/~gph120/img/pspad/statusbar.png )

The one thing I would like to add is that while the "find in files"
method is quite likely to produce this behavior,
(a) it is by no means the only case in which it occurs, and
(b) it does *not* happen always when I do as Heiner described.

For me, the background of the small rectangles has always been white so
far, and the "strange content" always looks like a part the Ximian
toolbar that I use.
