This sounds like an interesting project. I've done a fair amount of digging in the BGE codebase (and the BGE rendering code as well). I use the nick Moguri and I'm frequently in the #blendercoders IRC channel on freenode. So, drop by and hopefully I can answer some of your questions. :)
