I have to agree that the placement of the 3d cursor should be changed 
from the current LMB implementation.
I don't place the 3d cursor with left mouse as it's too imprecise and 
usually select a vert./object and then place the 3d cursor on the vert 
or to the center of the object with Shift+S (which I use a ton).
Shift+LMB would be a good default for this as it would stop the 
accidental placement of the cursor when you miss a vert or click onto 
the 3d window when using 2 monitors etc.

Border select would probably (IMHO) be better with left mouse, though 
maybe something like Shift+LMB for add and Shift+Alt+LMB for subtract, 
so it doesn't interfere with the widget, 3d view rotation or marquee 
select, though I'm fine with the current B key implementation.
