I don't know the code but it seems that if you press escape it waits until a cycle is over before going onto the next cycle. It would seem that you could just disconnect the loop at this point until the user wanted to reconnect the loop at that point. Only problem I could see would be if the user wanted to end the loop or restart it but that should not be hard. You can already work on the data as the cycles loop works so I would expect that to be no problem.
