All of the above is regarding changing the gamuts for any tristimlus space,
_not_ changing the model / encoding scheme.

The issue is that because the basis vectors of any RGB / XYZ transform are
non orthogonal, _each_ RGB space behaves differently during rendering /
image manipulation. That is, the reference space you choose ends up
influencing the qualia of your renders / manipulations in terms of how
things look, making the choice of reference spaces an important one.

In all cases though, the reference remains tristimulus RGB of a given white
point.
