What genre? When you are a assassin and where makes a difference. A Ninja is appropriate in one setting; a KGB operative in another; the CIA is always cool but there are tons of other examples. Usually, the most infamous were the clumsiest - their only claim to fame was who they killed. So, are you trying for the "007" type with gadgets, hardware and support? or the "kill the famous so I can be famous" type? The former would be hard to research because they try not to be known - the latter are easier to find but their methods are simplistic.
