I've chatted with the designer and he made it pretty clear that
you should feel free to make changes to the combat system,
particularly the die used. In the official rules "it's on the party
setting" he said, and adjusting to a smaller die tightens up the game.
All I've done is play a mini solo game so I can't really judge,
but given the price it may be worth experimenting a bit prior to
tossing it.
