I have a guest in town, and she's pretty new to boardgaming. Like, I don't think she ever played Clue, and she's of retirement age. Her son recently got her Carcassonne, and she's been playing it a lot with her circle of friends. I would like to do something nice for her, so I thought of picking up an expansion. I've only played H&G and The City, so I know nothing about the standard game and its expansions. Based on BGG threads that I read prior to The Event, Inns & Cathedrals and Traders & Builders are the essential expansions. However, my FLGS recommended the newer Abbey & Mayor expansion (though I suspect it's because they're out of T&B).
