I don't think productivity can save us now. I heard some guy on the radio who claims that manufacturing companies who make things off shore for pennies, ship the things to places like the Cayman Islands and (this bit was weird) sell the shoes or whatever to themselves in a way that they can claim little profit made on US soil and then _negotiate_ their taxes with the IRS. He firmly believes that to fix the economic problems the government needs to fix the tax system and go after the biggest companies.
