The ability of the Witch card is the only one that uses the Curse. So unless you have her out, there's no reason to take out the Curse cards. Expansions to the game will likely feature other cards that make use of the curses as well.
Don't use the trash card. It's supposed to mark where the global trash pile goes, but there's no need for it really. Look at the back of the group of 11 cards. You'll notice that one of them has a different color back. Remove the 11th blue-bordered card from each of the stacks of 10.
