Well, those trains are meant to be replacements for lost trains for
starters.  I'm sure Alan and the various playtesters worked out the
ideal amount of trains per player ahead of time and my guess is that
if they felt it worked better with more trains, we'd be instructed to
use more.

That being said, it IS your game to do whatever you'd like with and I
don't see anything inherently wrong with adding them, but it would
theoretically make the game just that much longer and you might lose
some late game tension due to being able to complete routes that you
or otherwise might not be able to with the regular amount of trains.
All I think it would do is slightly reduce some tension.

I personally think you should be thinking "why?" instead of "why not?"
when considering adding the trains.  Just because it won't affect
things much doesn't mean it would add anything that would make the
game more enjoyable and if that's the case, why mess with a proven
method?
