Keith, I think the obvious starter question is: what sorts of games do you already like to play? Abstract, thematic, euro, wargame, etc.? That said, the first thing I'd do (and still do) is hit up eBay for some lightly used games in the style you're looking for. I'm sure you could pick up a copy of Acquire (just to give you one example) for a couple bucks plus cheap shipping.
