Due to a known bug in BGG itself, I don't get notifications there even though I am subscribed to the proper thread. A message here is a perfect way to alert me (and anyone else hitting the same bug) of upcoming outages. It also alerts me via email, which I check regularly, so I'll hear about it even if I am not logged into BGG at the time. It's perfect.
