The short answer is you trade away stuff to someone who wants it, and you 
get stuff from someone who has something you want. The person you send to 
and the person you receive from are very unlikely to be the same person.

By listing both what you have to offer and what you want from other 
people's offers, you provide data for the person running the math trade to 
try and match you up with stuff you want in rough proportion to what you 
give away to others.
