The 18xx series is probably the grand-daddy of them all, but you would 
probably need an experienced group to help you learn its nuances.  1830 is 
probably what most people start with and it is commercially available.  The 
reprint is much derided, but it is playable.  If you try it, invest in a 
set of poker chips to make the money easier.
