I broadly agree with what Premnath has written regarding the plight of innocent
civilians.
One must have an understanding of the sufferings of people, whether they are
Tamils or Hindi-speaking people. This is an essential human trait.
I feel that one cannot take shelter under the pretext of "internal affairs of
Sri Lanka ," for one's indifference or insensitive attitude. Number two, given
the proximity of the southern part of India to Sri Lanka, a problem in Sri
Lanka, when it grows beyond a particular level, will certainly have its bearing
in that part of India in one way or the other. Number three, only those who are
apparently ill-informed of the history of Sri Lanka, particularly since the
nation's Independence, can only dismiss aerial attacks on hospitals as
something aberrations and say the same people were supporting the LTTE. It is
cruel to say so, when the people are forced to live in such circumstances that
they have no security to their lives and cannot defend themselves.
A country or society, calling itself civilised or modern, cannot and should not
remain mute spectators to the obvious instances of human rights violations
being committed on a large scale.
Ramakrishnan
