THINKING OUTSIDE THE BORDERS: LIBRARY LEADERSHIP IN A WORLD COMMUNITY
It is a joint project of the Arizona State Library, the Mortenson Center for
International Library Programs at the University of Illinois, and the
Illinois State Library, USA, funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute of
Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
Description:
A leadership institute for librarians interested in learning more about the
world library community -- February 18-20, 2007, Phoenix, Arizona, USA
Application deadline: November 15, 2006
The project is designed to encourage librarians to think globally and act
locally. The grant is to create a library leadership program that promotes
greater understanding and appreciation of the world community in which
librarians work. The program will focus on leadership issues that affect
librarians regardless of the country in which they live. The project was
developed by the Illinois State Library and the Mortenson Center for
International Library Programs at the University of Illinois Library at
Urbana-Champaign.
Audience: Middle-level to senior-level library managers. English language
skills are required to attend the Institute. The program is limited to 30
librarians: 15 librarians from Arizona, USA and 15 librarians from other
countries.
Schedule:
Program applications are due by November 15, 2006.
Applicants will be notified of selection by December 15, 2006
Program logistics including lodging, agenda and related activities
will be provided with selection notification.
The program will be held February 18-20, 2007 in Phoenix, Arizona,
USA. The first activity will be in the late afternoon on February 18.
The program is also a pre-conference of the Transborder Library Forum
2007: "Bridging the Digital Divide -- Crossing All Borders" February 20-24,
2007 in nearby Tempe, Arizona http://www.asu.edu/lib/foro/.
Participants must register separately for the Transborder Forum and be
responsible for all expenses related to that event.
Program Expenses:
Participants will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and
expenses to reach Phoenix, Arizona on February 18, 2006.
Upon successful completion of the program, non-U.S. librarian
participants will receive a scholarship to be applied toward expenses as
needed. The scholarship will be a debit card for $1000 US$.
Arizona librarians selected to participate in the program will follow
the State Library travel reimbursement guidelines.
Lodging, meals and local transportation will be provided and arranged
as part of the program. Details will be provided to participants.
Selection Criteria:
A degree in library and information science or school library media
specialist.
Current employment in a library, school media center, or archive.
Demonstration of leadership.
Willingness and ability to share what is learned with others in the
profession.
Excellent communication skills.
Willingness and ability to work as team members.
Interest in international library issues.
Commitment to attend the full program in February 2007.

A cover letter and brief resume including professional experience,
activities, publications, educational background, and participation in other
leadership programs, international experience and contact information.
A statement of no more than 500 words describing your achievements,
experience working in teams, experience training other librarians, as well
as your aspirations for the future and interest in international library
issues.
A statement of no more than 500 words describing why you consider yourself
to be a suitable candidate for the program including how participation in
the program will
help you achieve your professional goals,
benefit your home institution, and
contribute to the development of libraries.
Two letters of support from supervisors or colleagues commenting on your
leadership abilities and achievements.
