"A Universidade de Illinois em Urbana-Champaign está oferecendo cinco bolsas de estudo para bibliotecários da América Latina interessados em participar de um curso de treinamento de oito semanas (4 de setembro a 2 de novembro de 2007) em suas instalações. O curso "Thinking Outside the Borders: Library Leadership in a World Community" é voltado para bibliotecários com capacidade de liderança, com bom domínio da língua inglesa. Conforme estou informado, a biblioteca da universidade possui um acervo de onze milhões de livros e a instituição de ensino treinou bibliotecários brasileiros há sete anos. 2. A joint project of the Illinois State Library and the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. Funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) DESCRIPTION: Thinking Outside the Borders: Library Leadership in a World Community is a National Leadership Grant funded by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The project is designed to encourage librarians to think globally and act locally. The grant is for the development, testing, and implementation of a library leadership program that promotes greater understanding and appreciation of the world community in which librarians work. The program will focus on leadership issues that affect librarians regardless of what country they live in. The project was developed by the Illinois State Library and the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign. This unique opportunity will allow participants not only to participate in Thinking Outside the Borders, but also the complete Fall 2007 Mortenson Center Associates Program. The Associates Program provides visitors-known as Mortenson Associates-with a broad knowledge of, and exposure to, the theory and practice of librarianship in America and provides ample opportunities to exchange information about practices in a wide variety of countries. The dates of this year's Associates Program are September 4-November 2, 2007, which will include a visit to a host library outside of Urbana-Champaign. AUDIENCE: Thinking Outside the Borders targets middle-level library managers. This new series of leadership activities will bring together librarians from Illinois with librarians from Mexico and Latin America. SELECTION CRITERIA: A limited number of scholarships to cover all costs of the eight-week training program will be awarded to librarians from Mexico and Latin America. Scholarship recipients will be selected competitively based on the following criteria: 1.Degree in library and information science or school library media specialist. 2.Current employment in a library, school media center, or archive. 3.Demonstration of leadership. 4.Willingness and ability to share what is learned with others in the profession. 5.Excellent communication skills. 6.Willingness and ability to work as team members. 7.Interest in international library issues. 8.Proficiency in English. 9.Commitment to attend the Mortenson Center's Fall Associates Program from September 4-November 2, 2007. APPLICATION PACKAGE (must be in English): 1.Cover letter and brief resumé, including your professional experience, activities, publications, educational background, information on participation in any other leadership programs, international experience, and contact information. 2.Statement of no more than 500 words describing your achievements, experience working in teams, experience training other librarians, as well as aspirations for the future and interest in international library issues. 3.Motivation statement of no more than 500 words describing why you consider yourself a suitable candidate for the program and how participation will *help you achieve your professional goals, *benefit your home institution, and *contribute to the development of libraries. 4.Two letters of support from supervisors or colleagues commenting on your leadership abilities and achievements.
