Note: The following formats are for downloadable books read on an ebook reader such as Kindle, Nook, iPad and Sony. Works cited list: Rowling, J. K. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. New York: Arthur A. Levine Books, 1999. Kindle ebook file. (Another naming option for this medium of publication could be Kindle digital file.) Parenthetical citation: Add the parenthetical citation information at the end of the relevant sentence (Rowling Ch. 2, location 17, par. 2). The most recent MLA Handbook (7th Edition) provides the following guidance: 5.7.18 A Digital File: This section applies to downloadable e-books with readers (Kindle, Sony, IPad, etc.). “Digital files can exist independently from the Web or a published disc…In the place reserved for the medium of the publication, record the digital file format, followed by the word file— PDF file, Microsoft Word file, JPEG file, MP3 file, XML file and so on—neither italicized (except for titles of the software programs) nor enclosed in quotation marks” (210-211). Note: For ebooks accessed through databases and read online (e.g., ebrary or NetLibrary), the medium of publication would be listed as Web. 6.2 Information Required in Parenthetical Documentation states: “References in the text must clearly point to specific sources in the list of works cited…Identify the location of the borrowed information as specifically as possible” (214-215). Note: Electronic book readers such as Kindle, designate locations as opposed to page numbers. 6.4.2 Citing Part of a Work: “If you quote, or paraphrase, or otherwise use a specific passage in a book, an article, or another work, give the relevant page or section (e.g. , paragraph number or numbers” (220-221).
