Yes, this sounds familiar to me as well. I only discovered this very  
recently. We default to Caches as well in UnicodeChecker. I don’t  
think I could ever find information on this in the proper Spotlight  
documentation.

Yeah, migrating this won’t be fun.

A quick test suggests that ~/Library/Metadata makes it into backups.
