I appreciate the time that went into this! However, I don't see a problem with the current icon, which has been with BibDesk for a very long time (I think Mike drew the pen, and paid for an artist to draw the rest).
Additionally, I suspect the round-icon fad will pass, just like the brushed-metal icon fad and other Apple-inspired UI gimmicks that grow tired after a couple of years.
