I don't know the full range of possibilities here, but you might get better results if you enter names in reverse order, with last and first name separated by commas; and use "and" to separate different names.
Darwin, Charles and Einstein, Albert and Newton, Issac This should give you Darwin, Charles as the first author, with Einstein, Albert as the second. BD behaves like BibTeX, which uses a comma to separate first and last names and "and" to separate names.
