If I have a search active and drop a file or URL on one of the items
in the search results, the file or URL is added to that publication,
but the publication disappears from the search results.
Clearing the search and searching again restores it to the results.
Are you using a nightly build? If so, where did you drop the file?
This may be a bug we fixed today.

this was 1.3.12 v981 -- it would happen when I dropped the file onto
a publication in column view list. Though I just noticed that if I
have a pub record open, and delete an attached file, the pub
disappears from the search results, and again can be restored by
clearing the search and searching again.
Yep, just tried v982 (latest nightly) & it's fixed. Thanks.
Next nightly build will have support for file count in smart groups,
and an attachment column as in Mail. Please test.
The field name you need is "Local File" with a space; pick it off the
dropdown menu, because you can't type it manually.
Both of these seem to work well & address the concerns I had
mentioned -- thanks!
