You could try opening a range of ports. On Leopard it seems to be using ports > 50000 (51122 and 51123). Launch BibDesk on Tiger, then run `lsof |grep BibDesk |grep TCP` in Terminal to see what it's using.

It's likely possible to rewrite it to use a fixed port, but a) it's a large amount of code that's currently tested/working b) Leopard obviates the need for a fixed port and c) there have been only two requests for a dedicated port since the feature was added (i.e. no one uses it anyway).
