The styles with variable width labels (e.g. alpha) have the most problems.
I suspect the problem is in some combination of \flushright, \hfill and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] width computations, but all I can do is guess at this point 
since
latex.ltx is beyond me.  I'd suggest asking on comp.text.tex.
