I use it with 2.6.3 with no problem.

What I do i store all my references in Citeulike, and then use the  
capacity of the plugin to fetch them to display the infos. It's  
actually quite simple, you just add /bibtex/ between  http://www.citeulike.org/ 
  and /whatever-the-path

It works great for both single and several references…

I agree with you on the readme, though
