I'd like to add that I got a response from the programmers at ironic software:

Yes there is. Is it named OpenMetaSpotlight.mdimporter. This info can be read in the schema.XML.

The shortname searches are to function like kind:TIFF , etc.

Hi,

sorry I forgot this: I think it is within the Tags application (might as well be in the free Tagit-proof-of-concept, I have to ask in the ironic forum. So far I have shied away from buying Tags because it is clearly clearly much too buggy).

In addition to Tags there was a free applescript add-on( see
http://saudette.net/projects/index.php?title=Tags.app_Hacking)
which enables to manipulate tags from within the HoudahSpot-search- results.

So far I have only been able to imagine to search _outside_ BD via openmeta-tags, smart-folders would then show items managed in Bibdesk (linked files) but stuff kept outside as well. Sorting spotlightresults in Finder is awkward since Leopard unfortunately, so it is more likely I will either do things in HS or later maybe Leap (when it is openmeta-enabled).

As I wrote in a previous post, this is a method of grouping things without the need to look for location:

Sources (files) with tags: "Promotion, Quelle, Buchenwald, SAM, Arbeitsbedingungen, Qualifikation, Chapter_III" ; "Promotion, Quelle, Ellrich, SSW, Arbeitsbedingungen, Qualifikation, Chapter_III"

Literature: "Promotion, Literatur, Arbeitsbedingungen, Qualifikation, Chapter_IV"

The files themselves could either be kept in BD's papers-folder if appropriate or in a folder-structure like:

"Promotion/Buchenwald/Quellen/Archiv Buchenwald";
"Promotion/Buchenwald/Quellen/Bundesarchiv Lichterfelde";
"Promotion/Buchenwald/Quellen/Bundesarchchiv Ludwigsburg";
"Promotion/Ravensbrück/Quellen/Bundesarchiv Ludwigsburg" etc.

This mirrors my paper-based filesystem (somewhat …ouch…)

I think it would be handy to have the ability to create smart- folders searching for openmeta-tags WITHIN BD at some point, but I think this is not priority. When (I believe it will) the standard has been stabilized/established there might be some sense for this, currently this is not necessary.

So much for now,

thanks,
Rolf

Hi Adam,

well I am able to either search/see tags with smart folders
("tag:promotion") directly,
or
- use HoudahSpot (specifying openmeta-tags as a search-criterion)
- use Tagit by ironic software (free) (creates smart folders; can
search tags in the HUD-interface), the developers plan to implement
the use of openmenta tags into Leap and Yep, Deep, a picture-
management solution is already using openmeta-tags.
- use Tags (Shareware, I'd call it early release-software, currently a
private beta which overcomes some bugs with tagging and umlauts;
importing of tags is still not properly implemented ) (creates smart
folders; can search tags in interface)

So have you got some kind of Spotlight importer on your system that
declares the "tag:" metadata key? It may be inside an app (HoudahSpot
doesn't have one).

But I have to say: I am not (yet) utilizing openmeta-tags and use the spotlight-comment ("&"). This is still very much a developing standard
as discussion in the ironic software forum show.

I plan to use this and convert my tagging system from the spotlight-
comment thing to manage sources (which not all can be kept as
references in BibDesk) and lots of other files on my mac.

Greetings,

Rolf

So where could BibDesk come into this workflow? Any idea what you
would like it to do? I could imagine BD to search tags, but I'm
hesitant to add another search criterium.
