That is an example for a paper in the scientific literature. In
some instances I would just need a list of sources without
footnoting from a paper. In other instances, I will have a paper or
presentation (usually in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint,
sometimes in Apple Pages) that have footnote with corresponding
references. I've done this all manually in the past. I would like
to be able to do it using something like BibDesk or EndNote so that
it is more automated. I would appreciate it if you could direct me
to plug-ins, Macros, templates or FAQ's that describe how to do this.
This is an example of the AMA style, which is widely used in
biomedical science. As I previously noted, there is a relatively
complete AMA style template in the CiteInPages download
(jhh.med.virginia.edu/main/CiteInPages). Just unzip the archive and
find the AMAstyle template file. You don't have to use the rest of the
files, though you may find them useful for Pages integration. Template
files should go in ~/Library/Application Support/BibDesk/Templates.
There have been some changes in BibDesk recently, but I think you
still need to "install" a template to give it a name within BibDesk so
that you can select it for export or copying. Templates are installed
in Preferences > Templates. The AMAstyle template should be installed
as an rtf "general template." I installed it under the name "AMA Style."
Then when I export a set of references (File > Export...), I can
choose "AMA Style" as the file format they will be saved to an rtf
file in the AMA format.
Alternatively, I can set the AMA Style template to be the copying and
dragging template (Preferences > citations, set format to Template and
the template to AMA Style). That will allow me to select one or more
references in BibDesk, copy them and then paste them in AMA style
directly into another program.
Finally, I can use the popup menu under the preview pane in BibDesk's
window to choose "AMA Style," and selected references will be
displayed in that style in the preview pane. They can be copied
directly from there and pasted into other programs with formatting
intact.
My AMA style template doesn't include numbers before each entry
because I generally use the receiving program's list numbering feature
if I want numbers. If you want to add numbers to the template, the
syntax is described in the templates section of the BibDesk Wiki. RTF
templates can be edited easily in TextEdit.
Feel free to contact me directly if you decide to follow this up and
you have additional questions.
