I envision managing references in the following way:

Maintain a master database of all references I use.
Also a large set of macros I currently keep in an external file.

The individual .bib file for each paper would be generated in some
fashion from this master database. I'm picturing something like a smart
playlist.

Right now I'm just keeping a master bib file and dragging entries to bib
files for papers.

I sense that BibDesk groups can be used to accomplish something like
this more efficiently. I clearly don't properly understand how, though.

The obvious thing would seem to be to create, say, a static group for
each paper. The next thing would be to save just this group as a single
bib file that would include just the references in the group, along with
any of the macros used in it. This is the part I can't figure out how
to accomplish.

I would appreciate some hand-holding.

Thanks,
David Craig
