Now I feel like an idiot because it seems to be working ok now. I swear, it 
wasn't, for three days in a row, even after restarting, etc.

FWIW, you understood pretty clearly what I was saying about how to generate the 
"bug."

According to Murphy's law, it will start up again just after I send this email.
