You don't say whether you use latex or not. If you do, I encourage you to 
explore the possibilities of biblatex. It allows you to easily adjust citation 
and bibliography styles to your taste. This, together with the macros for 
journal title Christiaan mentioned, is how I did my thesis and other writings.
